Willingen combines the largest ski area in Hesse with an unusually high density of spa hotels: the 17 km of slopes on the Ettelsberg lie anywhere from a few hundred metres to around 5 km from your room, depending on the hotel. If you plan to ski by day and use the sauna in the evening, three things matter: distance to the lift, a ski room on site, and a spa that actually delivers after a cold day. This guide sorts the hotels featured on this site accordingly and lists the dates when the village fills up.
Best for families where parents still want to unwind: kids' pool world plus a separate adults-only spa across two floors.
Best for families and groups: large leisure hotel with a pool, three saunas and day-spa packages at the in-house Beauty Lounge from € 139 for two.
Best for swimming outdoors even in winter: year-round heated outdoor pool at the Carpe Diem spa, dogs welcome.
The ski area offers 17 km of groomed slopes at an altitude of 560–840 m. The Ettelsberg-Seilbahn (gondola lift with 8-person cabins) is 1,400 m long and carries 2,800 people per hour, with skis and snowboards travelling inside the cabin. The K1 chairlift Köhlerhagen, a detachable 8-person chairlift (the chairs release from the cable inside the station, which allows slow, comfortable boarding) with heated seats and a weather bubble, measures around 1,500 m and handles up to 3,000 people per hour. Added to this are the 800 m Ritzhagen chairlift, six surface lifts and six conveyor belts.
Around 13 km of the slopes can be covered by 120 snow generators, which carries the season through mild winters; in good conditions it takes three days and nights to cover every slope. All installations run daily from 8:30–16:30; on Wednesdays and Fridays floodlit skiing from 18:30–21:45 is added when conditions allow. There is no fixed season date: the area opens as soon as natural snow or sustained frost make snowmaking possible, in practice usually between December and March.
Prices for 2026/27 had not been published at the time of writing. In the 2025/26 season a day pass cost from € 43 for adults and from € 28 for children aged 6–15. In the 2025/26 season, children under 6 travelled free when accompanied by a paying adult. Half-day passes were from € 29 and from € 20, the early-bird pass (8:30–11:00) from € 23 and from € 17. If you stay longer and want to ski several areas, the Wintersport-Arena-Card is the option: valid from 3 days across several regional ski areas including Winterberg, with the 7-day card most recently from € 237 and from € 139.
The Sauerland Card (guest card handed to you by your hotel on arrival) works as a ticket for buses and trains throughout the Sauerland and brings discounts, among them the Ettelsberg-Seilbahn. It does not include the lift pass. It is funded through the visitor’s tax: from € 3.00 per person per night in Willingen, from € 2.50 in Usseln, with children up to 14 exempt. The ski area offers 1,400 free parking spaces directly at the lift stations, and Willingen railway station is about a 10 min. walk away.

For Vis á Vis Parkhotel, Wellnesshotel Bürgerstuben, Hotel Fürst von Waldeck, Waldhaus am See (Hoppecketal, approx. 3 km) and the Sunday Hotel Willingen in the Usseln district (approx. 5 km) no reliable information on ski rooms, rental or shuttles is available. Ask them directly before booking.
The heated outdoor pool is the underrated winter criterion. Heated all year and therefore usable below freezing, by the hotels’ own account, are only the Sporthotel Zum Hohen Eimberg and the Familotel Sonnenpark. The Romantik Hotel Stryckhaus does have an outdoor pool but keeps it closed in the winter months depending on the weather, and at Göbel’s Landhotel the outdoor pool runs in the summer months only.
The Mühlenkopfschanze sits about 700 m south-west of the centre of Stryck and, at HS147 (hill size, the defining construction point of a jump), is the largest large hill in the world. The stadium holds 23,500 spectators according to the municipality. The FIS World Cup takes place in 2027 from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 January. That weekend the village runs at capacity: rooms sell out early, prices rise, and both the drive in and parking take longer. If you want to attend, book well ahead; if you want quiet, avoid the date.
Besides the World Cup, Christmas and New Year are the busiest periods, followed by the Dutch spring holidays and carnival from 7–9 February 2027. The recommended dates for the Dutch spring holidays in 2027 are 13–21 February in Zuid and 20–28 February in Noord and Midden. Schools may depart from these dates; check your school’s holiday calendar. Quieter and usually cheaper are the January weeks without the World Cup, early December and March, as long as snowmaking holds.
That varies considerably by hotel. The shortest walk is at the Familotel Sonnenpark with around 400 m to the ski and toboggan slope; Göbel's Landhotel and Hotel Hochsauerland 2010 each sit about 1 km from the lifts. Arriving without a car, you can reach the ski area on foot from Willingen station in roughly 10 min., and the Sauerland Card serves as a ticket for buses and trains.
